4:30am We are all wide awake. So is a few million others!
We've had no connection. There is WiFi but the firewall in China prevents us from getting access to our usual sites. Thanks to our host and her friend Sebastian, both savvy techies, we were slowly able to get connected again.
Last night, we flew into Beijing Airport on Hainan Airlines, which i would rate 4 out of 5 stars (5th star reserved for the food). Excellent customer service and our airport experience was very smooth. Wendy (from Regina!) was there at the airport to welcome us - such a lovely sight in a sea of faces.
We were introduced to our first noodle soup shop just across the street. That first night, supper was done under 10 minutes and for about $5! Yum!
For our first day, we just walked around the neighbourhood discovering Hutongs (old roads/alleys of yesterdays) and yummy foods. This was the only smog (and rain) day during our stay in Beijing. The rest was blue skies and sunshine. We particularly love the fresh pastries made often by women in small spaces squeezed between other small spaces/stores and dumplings/buns freshly steamed.
