Huizhou 鰴州 is a historical region with many ancient villages.  I LOVE old villages.  Surrounded by mountains and rivers, stone archways, Ming-Qing Dynasties style homes, cobblestone alleys,... Most are well-preserved and still lived in as days past.  11 days to explore different parts of the area and hike up Yellow Mountain 黄山!

SheXian County 歙县

We lived within the ancient walled city of Shexian at Wendy's September Huizhou Inn .  We realized it's the first time we've slept in China without traffic noise.

The kids' favourite hangout spot.  They pretty much had the whole place to themselves.  Another highlight was the constant stream of jazz and familiar western tunes.

Cozy corner with Wendy, the owner of the Inn.  Star of the place is a cat with multiple names.  We call him Baozi 包子 (because his face looks like a round bun).

It mostly rained the 4 days we were here but we didn't mind.  We enjoyed walking the small alleys, did a few sightseeing, ate well and read good books.

For an outing in the rain, we were offered these from the Inn.  It did not last long as our kids are in the habit of sliding in the rain.

We tried a river tour about an hour bus ride away but did not like it.  It was not only crowded, we had to stay inside and was so noisy!  The 'guide' spoke about the history of the area but we had not a clue what she said.  All we knew was everyone else was also talking.  The 'entertainment' at the various stops were... not desirable.  A museum (that was ok), a variety show (meh...), an ice box you can rent jackets to walk through (no thank you) and a peacock farm.

We did enjoy a visit to a museum where it was the home of a rich Huizhou businessman.  We got to roam and explore while dodging tour groups!
